There is a lot to unpack now that the first half of You’s fourth season has arrived after much anticipation from fans. In the most recent chapter, Penn Badgley’s antihero Joe Goldberg relocates to London and reinvents himself as Professor Jonathan Moore. He has even been involved in an intriguing new friend circle made up of young, wealthy Londoners since he is resolved to never longer act on his violent inclinations. But unlike previous seasons, Joe doesn’t commit the murders.
Members of Joe’s new elite group are the target of the “Eat the Rich Killer.” Joe is an outsider, therefore it makes sense that the gang would be wary of him. But the irony is that Joe is also a target of the attacker, who seems eager to set him up for the numerous homicides.
The first one started with Kate Galvin (Charlotte Ritchie) and the rest of the group being introduced to Joe by his neighbor and coworker Malcolm Harding (Stephen Hagan). After the gang partied at a popular neighborhood hangout, the following day, Joe discovered Malcolm’s dead body on his dining room table in the pilot episode. Joe used tried-and-true methods to dispose of the body despite having no recollection of doing so.

Joe eventually gets a mysterious message from a “high-security chat software that erases anything you say” near the end of the episode. The anonymous texter praised Joe for his quick thinking and discretion in handling the Malcolm problem.
The note said,
“Here I believed when I placed him on your table, you’d go down for my misdeeds.”
From then on, the murders and threatening texts persisted, but in episode 5, when the gang visited a vast estate owned by Lady Phoebe Borehall-family Blaxworth’s in the English countryside, things reached new heights (Tilly Keeper). When Joe arrived, Kate was standing over her friend Gemma Graham-(Eve Greene’s Austin) bloody, dead body, but Kate insisted she was “not a murderer.”
After Kate, with whom he had been having a covert liaison, pointed out that “this situation doesn’t look good” for either of them, Joe assisted her in disposing of the body.
Joe was told by Kate,
“You heard what they were saying.” “Handing you the finger.”
Later, Kate questioned whether Joe had killed Gemma or had intended to kill her as well and why he was “this proficient at hiding bodies.”
Joe said to her,
“When I found you with Gemma, I knew either you killed Gemma or someone is setting you up.” “Because Malcolm and I experienced the same thing,” you say.
Even though Kate and Lady Phoebe, who joined the group later, had become allies for Joe, the rest of the gang was strongly opposed to him. Roald Walker-Burton (Ben Wiggins), Kate’s childhood friend who also had a deep crush on her, overheard her telling Lady Phoebe what had happened and went to stop Joe just as he was sneaking a bracelet Kate had lost from where they’d left Gemma’s dead body.
Roald led the company in a sitting room after bringing Joe back, saying: Introducing the Eat the Rich Killer. Consider this: He arrives, and our companions begin to perish. Roald informed the group that Kate and Lady Phoebe were calling Kate’s security guards as he pointed a shotgun at the back of Joe’s head and claimed to have discovered Joe in the game larder with Gemma’s body.
The gang didn’t accept Joe’s claim that Roald was the murderer, despite his attempt to refute Roald’s claim. Then Joe made the decision to flee, and Roald followed shortly behind. After a fight in the woods, Joe was able to knock Roald to the ground and render him unconscious.
Joe was still lying there when he saw the silhouette of a figure moving closer. He identified the individual right away as renowned author Rhys Montrose (Ed Speleers), who viewers initially meet in episode 1. Joe finally understood: “You are it. That was you.”
Rhys told Joe this after Roald and he were dragged to a room and chained up after Roald shot Joe in the head with the shotgun’s butt “For this kind of face-to-face, I wasn’t yet ready. However, you soon found yourself in a difficult situation, and it quickly became apparent that, if I didn’t step in, you would kill yourself.”
Roald continued to be unconscious while Rhys described his sinister past. Joe was already aware that Rhys had grown up without access to income from his family and had only acquired enough cash later in life to become a member of London’s most affluent social circles. The two had hit it off right away over jokes about their aristocratic friends.
Rhys disclosed his “plan” for them as Joe sat cuffed:
“We’re going to pin all the killings on [Roald],” he said. After writing a letter on Roald, who would be unable to assert his innocence if dead, Rhys told Joe that he would have to kill Roald but that he would handle “all the other touches.”
Rhys backed off when Joe pretended to be on his side, giving Joe the opportunity to murder Roald. Naturally, Joe hoped to use this time to devise a strategy for escaping. When Rhys came back, Joe made up a justification for why he was attempting to escape: it was difficult to commit murder while having his wrists shackled.
“If you’re clever enough to get yourself free, I’ll see you back in London and we can revisit this,” Rhys said Joe after realizing the scam. He lit the country manor on fire as he left by kicking over a candle.
As Joe broke free from his shackles and let Roald free, Roald awoke. As the two couples tried to flee, Kate happened to come across them and pulled them both to safety before the estate caught fire. In the fifth and final episode of season 4, part 1, we saw Kate and Joe meeting for the first time following their chaotic country trip.
Joe received a visit from Kate at his apartment, inviting him out for a beer. To her obvious dismay, he declined, knowing it was “hazardous” for her to be around him. When she finally departed, Joe turned on the TV and saw Rhys mentioning how “many” of the Eat the Rich Killer’s victims were his pals.
In order to “take matters into my own hands,” he declared, he would run for mayor of London. Joe replied in a voiceover, “I know who you are now, Rhys. And I’m heading your way. After the fifth episode ended, Joe gave a warning in a preview of part 2: “Rhys, I now know who you are. You have robbed me terribly. You believe that you are only beginning, but you are mistaken because I’m going to stop you.” You season 4’s second half premieres on Netflix on March 9.
