Keyboardist Martin Duffy of Primal Scream Died at the Age of 55

The lead singer of the UK band, Bobby Gillespie, says the late keyboardist was a “beautiful soul” who “lived to laugh and play music” Unfortunately, Martin Duffy, keyboardist for Primal Scream has passed away. He was 55.

According to a statement sent to Twitter by his brother, Duffy fell and had a head injury, which ultimately led to his death. Vocalist Bobby Gillespie claims that the keyboardist for Primal Scream passed away on Sunday at his home in Brighton.

His brother wrote that he “passed away peacefully” and was surrounded by people who loved him. Felt’s keyboardist, originally from Birmingham, England, joined the band in 1985 when it was still an up-and-coming English jangle pop outfit.

Duffy joined Primal Scream, a band he had been unofficially assisting, full-time two years after the group broke up and played keys on their landmark 1991 album Screamadelica and all subsequent releases until 2016.

Gillespie, Primal Scream’s main singer, who had known Duffy “since he was a teenager in Felt,” posted a lengthy homage to his late bandmate and friend on the band’s official Instagram.

“Hard to write this,” he began. “We never know how to speak around death other than polite platidudes.” “Martin was a very special character,” Gillespie continued.

“He had a love and understanding of music on a deep spiritual level. Music meant everything to him. He loved literature and was well read and erudite. An autodidact. A deep thinker, curious about the world and other cultures.”

“Martin was also in possession of a unique wit,” he wrote. “He had a swift eye for the absurd, the surreal and the ridiculous. He lived to laugh and play music. He was loved by all of us in the Scream. A beautiful soul. We will miss him.”

Primal Scream bassist Simone Butler honored Duffy with a tweet of her own, writing, “no words x I miss u already Duff 🤍 this is the saddest day and i’m tears writing this.”

In 2014, Duffy released a solo album titled Assorted Promenades and contributed to songs by both Oasis and the Chemical Brothers. After the untimely death of The Charlatans’ keyboardist Rob Collins in a vehicle accident, he filled in for them and other UK rock acts, as reported by Pitchfork.

Tim Burgess, lead singer for the band released a statement of his own on social media mourning Duffy’s death. “Another tragic loss of a beautiful soul,” Burgess wrote. “Martin Duffy stepped in to save The Charlatans when we lost Rob – he played with us at Knebworth and was a true friend.”

“He was a pleasure to spend time with,” he continued. “Safe travels Duffy 💔”
